midwestern days

Last night my boyfriend and I went to First Ave for our early valentines day celebration - to see ‘The Darkness’ because if we had ‘a song’, which we don’t, it would be ‘I believe in a thing called love’.  After last night, ‘I believe in a thing called love’ still firmly remains in the ‘not-technically-our-song’ category as ‘The Darkness’ were completely and utterly upstaged by their opening act, ‘Foxy Shazam’ (video above).  Holy shit, I can only think of one other show where I felt like the main act was upstaged by their openers and this was Neil Young being upstaged by Sonic Youth.  We all know Neil Young can write a mean song but you need stage presence to be a good performer and he lacks it, but I digress.  Last night these unknown (to me) guys blew the roof off first ave.  It was showmanship I’ve only seen the likes of in old footage of Queen, David Bowie, Iggy Pop… It was raunchy, it was glam, it was well written rock and roll anthems at their best it was everything a good show should be.  Hats off to you Foxy Shazam… it’s not everyday the little guy blows the big guy out of the water.  I’m so fortunate to have bore witnessin your church of rock and roll.

(want more? more, want a taste them live?! you should)
